Education news
The Match
The 2023 Main Residency Match was the largest Match in NRMP’s 70-year history, with a record number 42,952 applicants.

Seattle IM Residency
[image029.jpg]The Seattle IM Residency program had an outstanding match. In our class of 52 three-year residents (categorical track=39, primary care=13), there are 31 different medical schools represented. The class is 65% women and extremely diverse with 29% of the class identifying as URM, and another 29% non-URM people of color. There are 4 MD/PhDs.

“I am excited about each and every one of the people who matched into our program for next year,” said Program Director Dr. Ken Steinberg. “The mix of people and of the schools they hail from is really terrific…students from all over the country (& world) with wonderful personalities, diverse backgrounds, impressive accomplishments (both academic and non-academic), and varied career interests.”

Boise IM Residency
The Boise IM Residency also had an outstanding match. “We are thrilled with our incoming intern class,” said Program Director Melissa (Moe) Hagman.

Clinical news
UnBIASED patient-provider interactions
[image035.jpg]Dr. Brian Wood, associate professor (Allergy and Infectious Diseases) is a co-investigator on the UnBIASED (Understanding Biased patient-provider Interaction and Supporting Enhanced Discourse) Project. The goal of the project is to develop an automated tool that can be integrated into the clinic setting or training environment to help raise clinicians’ awareness of moments of implicit bias in their interactions with patients.

The project combines input from members of traditionally marginalized groups, including BIPOC and LGBTQ+ individuals, to learn about biased behaviors that manifest in healthcare settings and to better understand the impact on patients.

The UnBIASED team has also partnered with clinicians at Harborview Medical Center and UC San Diego clinics, who volunteered to have cameras installed in their exam rooms to record actual patient visits (with patient consent) and to have their interactions analyzed for potential indicators of bias.

Madison Clinic
[image036.jpg]Founded in 1985, the Madison Clinic was one of the first HIV-specific clinics in the country and is still the largest in the Pacific Northwest region. And this legacy continues.

“Much has changed even since I joined the clinic as a trainee in 2003, as HIV treatments have become less burdensome and better tolerated. As such, our clinical focus has expanded to include HIV prevention and treatment of comorbidities associated with an aging population of people with HIV,” says Shireesha Dhanireddy, MD, director of the Madison Clinic.

“We have also developed differentiated care delivery models to decrease barriers to care for individuals for whom the traditional clinic models have not been successful. As we look ahead, we will continue to provide comprehensive co-located services with the flexibility to meet patients where they are, such as in the community or via telemedicine services.”

Research news
Immunotherapy for advanced chondrosarcoma[image037.jpg]
Chondrosarcoma is a cancer of the cartilage, and the primary treatment is surgery. “As a generalization, there are no other treatments,” said Dr. Lee Cranmer, professor (Medical Oncology).

But Cranmer was optimistic that immunotherapy would work for his patient, Mark Schuck, a retired fisheries biologist. Although it is not approved for Schuck’s type of cancer, Cranmer’s team was able to obtain pembrolizumab, an immunotherapy drug, on a compassionate use basis. Schuck received his first infusion in September 2021. In less than three weeks, he was able to manage his pain with over-the-counter medications; within six weeks, he was off all pain relief.

“He’s had a dramatic and unexpected response despite there being no standard treatment for his condition,” Cranmer said. “Usually, nothing stops this disease, yet he is back to fishing, his pain went away, and he has gained weight.”

Cranmer is working to develop a clinical trial for a subset of patients like Schuck. “We now have five patients with chondrosarcoma who have taken immunotherapy and responded dramatically,” he said.
