Research news
Inflammation is culprit behind long COVID, study suggests
[cid:image021.jpg at 01D94869.B15BA700]Recent findings<https://bit.ly/3KBHImx> from researchers at UW and OHSU add a major piece to the puzzle of how COVID-19, a lung disease, becomes long COVID, a disease of the brain. The likely culprit of symptoms like foggy brain and vanishing memory: inflammation.

"SARS-CoV-2 causes inflammation in the brain. That's the critical point," said Dr. William Banks, professor (Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine) and associate chief of staff for Research and Development at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System. "Basically, the S1 protein, either by itself or as part of the virus, gets into the brain and you're off to the races."
