Clinical news Fred Hutch blood and marrow transplant program recognized nationally for patient survival outcomes [cid:image039.png@01D942F1.27226F60]The Fred Hutch Blood and Marrow Transplant Program has been recognized in an annual data report from the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) as exceeding expectations for one-year survival rates in patients who have received allogenic transplants of blood-forming stem cells from healthy donors. Of the 175 transplant centers and 25,385 patients included in the analysis, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center's program is one of the 11 (6.3%) to receive the exceeding expectations designation. "These survival data are particularly notable because they include patients treated during the COVID-19 pandemic," said Dr. Marco Mielcarek, professor (Medical Oncology) and medical director of adult blood and marrow transplantation at Fred Hutch. "I am grateful for the commitment of our multidisciplinary teams and the resilience of our program for contributing to these encouraging patient outcomes, especially during an unusually challenging time for both our patients and health care teams." Research news Inflammation is culprit behind long COVID, study suggests [cid:image021.jpg@01D94869.B15BA700]Recent findings from researchers at UW and OHSU add a major piece to the puzzle of how COVID-19, a lung disease, becomes long COVID, a disease of the brain. The likely culprit of symptoms like foggy brain and vanishing memory: inflammation. "SARS-CoV-2 causes inflammation in the brain. That's the critical point," said Dr. William Banks, professor (Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine) and associate chief of staff for Research and Development at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System. "Basically, the S1 protein, either by itself or as part of the virus, gets into the brain and you're off to the races."
