It was conceived by Dr. Valerie Montgomery-Rice, president of Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, and Dr. Mary-Claire King, professor of medicine (Medical Genetics) and genome sciences and an associate director of the UW MSTP. In the collaborative program, MSM students complete their first two years of medical school at MSM in Atlanta, during which they can apply to study for the PhD at UW. Those accepted move to Seattle for their PhD (usually four years), then return to MSM for medical school years three and four. The first student has graduated from the program, two students are here now, and two are starting next month. Research news Rapid Diagnostic Tests for Tuberculosis [cid:image011.jpg@01D866EA.AE121270]Before the Covid-19 pandemic, tuberculosis (TB) was the leading infectious cause of mortality worldwide, and still remains a leading cause of mortality worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In addition, estimates suggest that TB cases and deaths have increased substantially during the Covid pandemic. Over the last several years, Dr. Paul Drain, associate professor (Allergy and Infectious Diseases) and colleagues have been working on developing and evaluating rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for SARS-CoV-2. Some of their results and findings were recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine. To build upon the success of their research on COVID RDTs, they have been awarded a $4.7M grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for their project "Prospective Validation of Novel Diagnostics for Tuberculosis in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa: The PROVE TB Study" to develop and evaluate novel RDTs for Tuberculosis. "My research group has been developing and evaluating RDTs for infectious diseases for 15 years," said Drain. "With these funds (and our experience/success from Covid) we aim to develop effective and accurate RDTs for TB. If we are successful, then widespread, rapid testing for TB could change the trajectory of TB cases/deaths around the world." ________________________________ Dr. Taylor Coston, fellow, and his mentor, Dr. T. Importantly, since patients in this life-threatening circumstance would be under sedation and unable to give informed consent to be involved, the researchers leading the trial have acquired a federal exception that allows them to enroll patients without consent. "One example is new treatments for cardiac arrest. The affected person is typically unconscious and can't communicate with first-responders who are studying whether a new drug or device works better than current standard care," said Dr. Kathleen Kearney, assistant professor (Cardiology). "At this point, doxycycline after sex is a targeted intervention for certain populations, in this case men who have sex with men or transgender women who have already had an STI in the past year," said Dr. Annie Luetkemeyer (UCSF). She led the study with Dr. Connie Celum, professor (Allergy and Infectious Diseases). Read the full story from UW Medicine Newsroom.
