The Masters of the WGO (MWGO) Award is the highest honor WGO can bestow and is granted only to those individuals who have provided outstanding dedication to the mission of the WGO and achieved distinction in scholarly research, teaching, service to WGO and the community at large.

Research news
Promoting health equity in the kidney research workforce
[cid:image005.jpg at 01D90667.D73FEFB0]In 2021, the Mount Baker Foundation (MBF) made a $1M pledge ($100,000 annually for 10 years) to the Kidney Research Institute to increase diversity in nephrology research and the workforce by supporting candidates in the early-stage of their career, when securing funding is particularly difficult. Drs. Christine Limonte and Justin Bullock (Nephrology) are the first UW fellows to be recipients of support from the Mount Baker Foundation gift.

Strategies to innovate emergency care
[cid:image007.jpg at 01D90667.D73FEFB0]The University of Washington was awarded a 5-year competitive renewal by the NIH/NINDS as one of 13 clinical hubs for the Strategies to Innovate EmeRgENcy Care (SIREN) Clinical Trials Network. SIREN is charged with performing prehospital and in-hospital clinical trials in cardiovascular, neurologic and traumatic emergency care.

Continuing trials over the past 5 years at UW include ICECAP (evaluating the duration of therapeutic hypothermia after cardiac arrest), and BOOST3 (evaluating interventions in traumatic brain injury). Principal investigators are Drs. Peter Kudenchuk, professor (Cardiology) and Nick Johnson, associate professor of medicine (Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine) and emergency medicine. The grant awards ~ $16 million across sites for infrastructure support over the next 5 years.

Call for applications
The Diabetes Research Center (DRC) is soliciting applications for the 2023 Pilot & Feasibility Awards and Stroum Graduate Fellowship Awards. These funding opportunities are meant to promote the development of new and innovative research projects directed at basic, clinical and translational aspects of diabetes. Letters of intent and reviewer nomination forms are due by Jan. 11, 2023 and the deadline for full applications is Feb. 24, 2023. The University of Washington Sexually Transmitted Infections Cooperative Research Center (STI CRC) is accepting applications for Developmental Research Project (DRP) Awards. These developmental awards provide funding to support career development and research activities which will ultimately help early-career investigators compete for future R- and K- awards. Designing payment models to promote health equity
[cid:image009.jpg at 01D90667.D73FEFB0]Dr. Joshua Liao, associate professor (General Internal Medicine) and associate chair, hosted a Health Equity Conversation<https://bit.ly/3OIcsTb> with Dora Hughes, the Chief Medical Officer of the CMS Innovation Center, the national leader in setting new payment and delivery policy and models in the US. Drs. Liao and Hughes discussed how payment models can be designed to promote health equity rather than entrench or worsen inequity. Hosted by Dr. Liao, Health Equity Conversations <https://bit.ly/3UghcAo> is a series of discussions aimed at understanding how payment and other systems factors affect equity.
