Dear ACMS students!
Hope you had a good summer break and are looking forward to being back on
campus this fall!
I am writing this letter to introduce myself to you. My name is Ranjini
Grove, I am a faculty member in Statistics (some of you may have taken
classes from me) and I will be serving as the ACMS Director from 2024 -
2027.
I have always had a very high regard for the students in this program, and
I am excited to be a part of it. As you may be aware, the ACMS curriculum
underwent a significant overhaul last academic year and my main
priority currently is to work with our amazing advisors (Sarah Garner and
her team) to ensure that the transition is going smoothly. I am also
interested in ways to create community among the ACMS students and will
likely use this year to solicit your input to identify strategies that are
meaningful to you.
You will undoubtedly hear more from me over the course of this academic
year. For now, I want to make you aware of a couple of opportunities:
1. UWAA runs a program called Huskies @ Work that pairs students with
alumni. They are currently accepting applications from students and
mentors: Huskies at Work | Alumni (washington.edu)
<https://www.washington.edu/alumni/future-alumni/huskiesatwork/>
Applications are open until Oct 20, please get yours in. It sounds like a
good way to make connections.
2. If you are still looking for a course to take to fill out your fall
quarter roster, I want to make you aware of CSE 390 D (4 cr) which is being
taught by Prof. Stuart Reges. This course is intended for non-CSE majors
interested in the mathematics most often used by computer scientists. It
would be particularly helpful as background material for students who
intend to take a 400-level CSE non-majors course like CSE 417 (Algorithms
and Computational Complexity). Please em Prof. Reges (
reges at cs.washington.edu) if you have questions about this course.
Good luck with fall quarter!
All the best.
Ranjini
