The graduate students have prepared amazing projects, but we are currently short of applicants to fill these projects as the undergraduate students have fewer opportunities to hear about the program in the summer. Therefore, please help us spread the word to the undergrads! The program details can be found at https://sites.uw.edu/wdrp/applications/ and they can apply through https://forms.gle/48JVZ9CEZHWpkvBw9. Many thanks, The WDRP Organizers From: Directed Reading Program Date: Monday, August 12, 2024 at 1:29?PM To: Directed Reading Program Cc: Alexander Waugh , Yirong Yang , salinas9 Subject: Spread the Word: Fall 2024 WDRP Undergrad Applications Now Open Dear All, Undergraduate student applications for the Fall 2024 edition of the Washington Directed Reading Program are now open! Thank you to everyone who has advertised to undergraduate students so far. If you would please send the information at the end of this message, the attached flyer, or the link sites.uw.edu/wdrp/applications to any students that you believe would benefit from this program, we would very much appreciate that! We encourage applications from students of all mathematical / personal backgrounds and identities. We have projects for students with various levels of experience - the main requirement is for participants to be excited about mathematics. Best wishes, The WDRP Committee Organizers: Alex Waugh, Juan Salinas, and Yirong Yang Faculty Supervisor: Bobby Wilson ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dear student interested in mathematics, The Washington Directed Reading Program (WDRP) from the Mathematics Department pairs interested undergraduate students with graduate student mentors to embark on a quarter-long independent mathematics reading project. Applications will be open until Friday, September 6 at 11:59 pm PT, and applicants will be notified by September 25 at the latest. To learn more about upcoming reading projects and apply, go to sites.uw.edu/wdrp/applications. We encourage applications from students of all mathematical / personal backgrounds and identities, and we have projects for students with various levels of experience - the main requirement is for participants to be excited about mathematics. The main components of the program are: * Start-of-quarter kickoff event, including an introduction to the program and time to mingle with other undergraduate and graduate students. * One-on-one weekly meetings between undergraduate student mentees and graduate student mentors, to discuss the readings. * Mid-quarter event with undergraduate students only, to connect with students working on other projects. * WDRP seminars featuring math talks by graduate mentors, informal Q&A and mingling sessions. * End-of-quarter presentations by undergraduate students on topics selected from their readings. In addition, 2 credits (CR/NC) for Math 398 are available to undergraduate students participating in and successfully completing the program. Note that you will not be able to sign up for this credit until after you have applied for and been accepted into the program, at which time we will provide further information about enrolling. Message-ID: Dear ACMS students! Hope you had a good summer break and are looking forward to being back on campus this fall! I am writing this letter to introduce myself to you. My name is Ranjini Grove, I am a faculty member in Statistics (some of you may have taken classes from me) and I will be serving as the ACMS Director from 2024 - 2027. I have always had a very high regard for the students in this program, and I am excited to be a part of it. As you may be aware, the ACMS curriculum underwent a significant overhaul last academic year and my main priority currently is to work with our amazing advisors (Sarah Garner and her team) to ensure that the transition is going smoothly. I am also interested in ways to create community among the ACMS students and will likely use this year to solicit your input to identify strategies that are meaningful to you. You will undoubtedly hear more from me over the course of this academic year. For now, I want to make you aware of a couple of opportunities: 1. UWAA runs a program called Huskies @ Work that pairs students with alumni. They are currently accepting applications from students and mentors: Huskies@Work | Alumni (washington.edu) Applications are open until Oct 20, please get yours in. It sounds like a good way to make connections. 2. If you are still looking for a course to take to fill out your fall quarter roster, I want to make you aware of CSE 390 D (4 cr) which is being taught by Prof. Stuart Reges. This course is intended for non-CSE majors interested in the mathematics most often used by computer scientists. It would be particularly helpful as background material for students who intend to take a 400-level CSE non-majors course like CSE 417 (Algorithms and Computational Complexity). Please em Prof. Reges ( reges@cs.washington.edu) if you have questions about this course. Good luck with fall quarter! All the best.
