From mathadv at uw.edu Tue Feb 7 13:55:30 2023 From: mathadv at uw.edu (Math & ACMS Student Services Office) Date: Mon Mar 18 20:35:17 2024 Subject: [Acmsmajors] Talks Feb. 9 & Feb. 13 of interest to ACMS students Message-ID: Dear ACMS Majors, Don't forget to join us this Thursday, Feb. 9 1:00-1:50pm in CSE2 G20 for the ACMS seminar. Our guest speaker will be Professor Marina Meila from the Statistics department. She will talk about Unsupervised Learning in the age of Big Data. Abstract: Unsupervised Learning (UL), that is, learning without labeled data, is the least developed arm of Machine Learning. In other words, understanding the structure of data, is the next big milestone in machine learning. I will explain why this is so, with a motivation on the sciences, and how the data collected by big scientific experiments is both a challenge and an opportunity to advance UL. Then I will go on to describe some of the questions that my group is working on, such as: how to know when a clustering is correct, non-linear dimension reduction, and modeling preferences, and how a group of ACMS students are participating in them. -------------------------------------------------------- There is another talk next week that you might be interested in. You must RSVP at the link below by this Friday. The Department of Statistics is pleased to announce a new student seminar series which is primarily aimed at BS and MS students. Our inaugural speaker is Duncan Wadsworth. Duncan Wadsworth, senior data scientist at Apple, will give his talk ?Life as a Data Scientist in Tech, As Told by a Statistician? on Monday, February 13 at 3:30pm (PT). If you are interested in attending, please RSVP at: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdeJ5Cs7_Z8XCVffsBtUAS3tocF6bivTnAAqfGSXk1ymi5SCw/viewform This seminar will be conducted in-person in Husky Union Building (HUB), Room 145. He is a very exciting mathematician, speaker, explorator and specialist of sea ice. The main talk will be on February 24th, 3:30-4:30 in ECE 125, see PDF attachment. As part of this event, we will hold an informal meeting session between Professor Golden and our majors, Thursday, February 23 from 3:30 to 4:30, THO 234 . Professor Golden will probably discuss such as his mathematics career, arctic explorations and non-technical aspects of his main talk.
