Cascadia Coastlines and Peoples Hazards Research (CoPes) Hub

What’s the CoPes Hub project about?

People living along the Pacific Northwest coastlines face multiple climate-driven threats. Through this project that is funded by a prominent funding organization, the National Science Foundation [nsf.gov]<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.nsf.gov/__;!!K-Hz7m0Vt54!kAFzMhZk1k20Akkw8HG_-vs4e-TpH3frVOSMdV3Lg5EsNi1maA5eYWTMFXvLfM80RSxjy9lz$> (NSF), the CoPes Hub will empower community members living in the coastal areas to be more resilient and prepared to deal with the impact of natural hazards. The CoPes Hub will also partner with coastal communities in an effort to co-produce knowledge about coastal hazards.

The aim of the CHARTER Fellows program is to provide undergraduate students opportunities to engage in CoPes Hub research, act as role models for high school students, and engage with the public around the science of coastal hazards.

Fellows will:

* Earn a stipend of $1,000 per year for their participation
* Learn about the multiple natural threats the Greater Cascadia coastline and communities face
* Gain practical experience in research, including conducting interviews, survey research, and participant observation; and take/participate in a research methods class in Winter 2023

* Develop skills in computer modeling and geographic information systems (GIS)
* Get the opportunity to attend a 3-day bootcamp in Summer 2023 in Grays Harbor, Washington.
* Present findings to educate high school students about earthquake and tsunami inundation

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Food Systems, Nutrition, and Health Seminar

The weekly Food Systems, Nutrition, and Health Seminar examines emerging issues in food systems and nutrition as they relate to personal, public, and planetary health, and is held autumn and winter quarters.

Systemic inequities across communities, low wages for food chain workers, expensive real estate, limited city zoning, polluted soils and water, compromised growing sites, and complicated supply chains are all compounded by increasing climate disasters. Food prices are rising along with food insecurity. So, what are the solutions? How can urban food systems instead support functional ecological systems, strong livelihoods, and just opportunities that promote food security and food sovereignty? How can the challenges be addressed and overcome to result in stronger health, sustainability, and equity outcomes? In this seminar we will dig into urban food systems, including communities, soils, agriculture, markets, and more as you engage with leaders at the forefront of addressing these challenges and opportunities.

Occurs every Tuesday from 11:30am -12:20pm in Kane Hall 120.
All UW faculty, students, and staff are welcome to attend. Video recordings are posted within a day or two after the session date. Consider subscribing to our YouTube channel<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCce911OXAY6wVuqbRQrhYhQ__;!!K-Hz7m0Vt54!l3B4aRUyYtyC2id4q8mMrKbr_X_R_Zz9_BeSJu_pWQufx8kkTJ_sx6Pmjs2RZJKr4Rh_tJn2f_nka6c$> to receive a notification as soon as videos are published.

Designing Beyond the Binary: Building Empathy and Gender-Inclusive Tools for Equitable Built Environments

Hello! Your input is needed for a survey on gender equity in design. This survey seeks to understand the place-based lived experiences of trans, nonbinary, gender nonconforming, queer individuals and communities as they navigate the places and spaces of daily life (home, work, school, public space, recreation, etc.). Your contribution will help generate tools for equitable design and support urban designers, architects, landscape architects, and interior designers in the co-creation of equitable and inclusive places.

The survey asks demographic questions, but no identifiable information is collected. All responses are anonymous. The survey will take less than 20 minutes to complete. At the end of the survey, there is an opportunity to enter a drawing to win a $100 gift card. (You will be asked to use an email address to enter the drawing, but your email will be unattached from any data you provide and discarded after the drawing.) For each response, up to 1,000 responses, we will be donating $1 to The Trevor Project [thetrevorproject.org]<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.thetrevorproject.org/__;!!K-Hz7m0Vt54!kiOlKU0WVzrd8Qxqsxecttn1VP57W4l1SYQY6fBCW9DiylzG4FTpa1FawNKo9Ya08sD_o4jFLqH-$>, a non-profit organization focused on suicide prevention efforts among LGBTQIA2+ youth.

Follow this link to the survey. [beyondthebinary.typeform.com]<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://beyondthebinary.typeform.com/survey__;!!K-Hz7m0Vt54!l3B4aRUyYtyC2id4q8mMrKbr_X_R_Zz9_BeSJu_pWQufx8kkTJ_sx6Pmjs2RZJKr4Rh_tJn2dlKCEXg$>

Your participation is greatly appreciated! The survey will remain open until the end of January. Feel free to forward this email and survey link to your networks. For questions about the research, contact beyondthebinary at mithun.com<mailto:beyondthebinary at mithun.com>.
