From mathadv at uw.edu Mon Nov 7 11:11:18 2022 From: mathadv at uw.edu (Math & ACMS Student Services Office) Date: Mon Mar 18 20:35:17 2024 Subject: [Acmsmajors] Applications Open for C21@Amazon and C21@Microsoft Message-ID: Hello Arts & Sciences Majors- We are excited to announce that applications are now for the C21@Amazon and C21@Microsoft Externship programs. Applications are due on November 16, 2022 for both programs. The C21 Externships are short-term career development programs designed to develop fundamental skills of professionalism needed to thrive in the workplace. Through the guidance of professionals at Amazon or Microsoft, students will have the opportunity to open their perspectives, gain insights on the diversity of career opportunities, and gain exposure to professional responsibilities and expectations. Here are what some students have said about the program: ?After listening to the journey my mentor took that got them to their current position at Amazon, I was introduced to unconventional career paths that I hadn?t considered before and was better able to imagine myself applying my History and Psychology majors in a professional space.? ?Through the externship, I built a professional and lasting relationship with my mentor and have learned to be comfortable reaching out to establish connections with people I look up to on LinkedIn.? ?From the C21 Externship, I was able to gain insight on how my mentor was able to successfully pivot his career from a biomedical engineer to business and this has opened my perspective in not limiting yourself to a set career pathway.? Application Deadline: February 19, 2023 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Food Systems, Nutrition, and Health Seminar The weekly Food Systems, Nutrition, and Health Seminar examines emerging issues in food systems and nutrition as they relate to personal, public, and planetary health, and is held autumn and winter quarters. Systemic inequities across communities, low wages for food chain workers, expensive real estate, limited city zoning, polluted soils and water, compromised growing sites, and complicated supply chains are all compounded by increasing climate disasters. Food prices are rising along with food insecurity. So, what are the solutions? How can urban food systems instead support functional ecological systems, strong livelihoods, and just opportunities that promote food security and food sovereignty? How can the challenges be addressed and overcome to result in stronger health, sustainability, and equity outcomes? In this seminar we will dig into urban food systems, including communities, soils, agriculture, markets, and more as you engage with leaders at the forefront of addressing these challenges and opportunities. Occurs every Tuesday from 11:30am -12:20pm in Kane Hall 120. All UW faculty, students, and staff are welcome to attend. Video recordings are posted within a day or two after the session date. Consider subscribing to our YouTube channel to receive a notification as soon as videos are published. 46th Annual WCBSUR Conference The 46th annual West Coast Biological Sciences Undergraduate Research Conference (WCBSURC) will take place on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, CA. The WCBSURC is among the oldest intercollegiate conferences of its kind in the nation and has so far brought together participants representing 200 different institutions from 40 states, plus Canada. Further information regarding this one day conference for undergraduate biology, biochemistry and biophysics researchers and their faculty mentors can be accessed here! Important Dates: Friday, February 3, 2023: Abstract submission and registration open. Monday, March 13, 2023: Deadline for abstract submission and early registration ($40 students/ $50 faculty). Designing Beyond the Binary: Building Empathy and Gender-Inclusive Tools for Equitable Built Environments Hello! Your input is needed for a survey on gender equity in design. This survey seeks to understand the place-based lived experiences of trans, nonbinary, gender nonconforming, queer individuals and communities as they navigate the places and spaces of daily life (home, work, school, public space, recreation, etc.). Your contribution will help generate tools for equitable design and support urban designers, architects, landscape architects, and interior designers in the co-creation of equitable and inclusive places. The survey asks demographic questions, but no identifiable information is collected. All responses are anonymous. The survey will take less than 20 minutes to complete. At the end of the survey, there is an opportunity to enter a drawing to win a $100 gift card. (You will be asked to use an email address to enter the drawing, but your email will be unattached from any data you provide and discarded after the drawing.) For each response, up to 1,000 responses, we will be donating $1 to The Trevor Project [thetrevorproject.org], a non-profit organization focused on suicide prevention efforts among LGBTQIA2+ youth. Follow this link to the survey. [beyondthebinary.typeform.com] Your participation is greatly appreciated! The survey will remain open until the end of January. Feel free to forward this email and survey link to your networks. For questions about the research, contact beyondthebinary@mithun.com. The WDRP is modeled after successful Directed Reading Programs (DRPs) at other universities around the country. This program pairs interested undergraduate students with graduate student mentors to embark on a quarter-long independent mathematics reading project. We expect to have around 11 projects in Winter 2023. Applications will be open until December 28th at 5:00 pm PDT, and applicants will be notified by January 6th at the latest. To learn more about upcoming reading projects and apply, go to sites.uw.edu/wdrp/applications. The main components of the program are: * Start-of-quarter kickoff event, including an introduction to the program and time to mingle with other undergraduate and graduate students * One-on-one weekly meetings between undergraduate student mentees and graduate student mentors to discuss weekly readings * Mid-quarter social event for undergraduates only * End-of-quarter presentations by undergraduate students on topics selected from their readings In addition, 1 credit (CR/NC) for Math 398 is available to undergraduate students participating in and successfully completing the program. Note that you will not be able to sign up for this credit until after you have applied for and been accepted into the program, at which time we will provide further information about enrolling. For more information and some sample projects, please see our website sites.uw.edu/wdrp. Feel free to ask any other questions by sending an email to wdrp@uw.edu.
