My name is George Fennell, and I?m the lead officer of Global Renewables Infrastructure Development (GRID). GRID is a registered student organization that works on designing, optimizing, installing, financing and assessing the societal impacts of renewable energy systems, with a specific focus on projects that advance equitable access to electricity. We?re an interdisciplinary mix of graduate and undergraduate students with backgrounds in engineering, natural sciences, social sciences and more. We're currently looking for students interested in creating sizing software with Python, in creating documentation for NREL's System Advisor Model, and to revamp a GUI in Dash. We?re recruiting new members! On Thursday, May 19th from 4:30-5:30 PM we?ll host an on-boarding meeting to provide an overview of GRID, discuss the projects mentioned below in greater detail, and answer questions. If you?re interested in joining, please fill out this short (~1 min) form so we can send you the zoom link. In 2018 and 2019, we installed just over 50 single home solar systems in municipalities in Puerto Rico that were severely impacted by Hurricane Maria, as well as rural indigenous populations in Guatemala that lack access to the electric grid. Throughout the pandemic, we have focused our efforts on remote projects, such as developing optimization software to design a solar and battery storage energy system for a library in Ghana. Currently, we have five project groups ready to expand with new members: - The Test Bed Team is working on establishing a testbed solar system to allow students to practice installing solar panels. GRID has permission from the Clean Energy Institute to install on their rooftop. - The Sizing and Optimization Team is working on a sizing software to calculate what kind of solar systems are needed for different communities. They are also creating documentation for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory?s System Advisor Model to use in GRID projects. No prior coding experience is required, only an interest in renewable energy technology. - The Business Team networks with the renewable energy community. They are currently planning a meet and greet for next fall, keep an ear out for that! They also create cost estimates and identify revenue sources for projects. - The Social Impacts Team is working to establish and ensure effective and ethical communication with partner communities. They are currently updating our solar kit user manuals for improved accessibility and self-sustainable troubleshooting, and writing about survey systems used during past projects. - The GRID Medium Team writes articles and publishes them to the GRID medium page. Some of the articles in progress include topics such as our sizing software, the status of distributed solar generation globally, GRID?s disaster relief installations in the aftermath of hurricane Maria, and an overview of the surveying and IRB process for community cooperation We?re also very interested in new projects, research and partnerships. If you have an interest in renewable energy and an idea for how your background or connections may be applicable, we?d love to hear from you and chat further about your concept! Please sign up or email grid@uw.edu. Thank you!
